It is a ceramic instrument used in laboratories for filtration by suction under vacuum or negative pressure. The Büchner funnel is in the shape of a flat cylinder, with many small holes on the bottom surface of the cylinder, and it is connected to a long and narrow cylindrical outlet below. When in use, a filter paper is usually placed on the bottom surface of the cylinder first.
